As a part of a much bigger whole, Charisma Hanekom is one of the many beautiful voices that keep Joyous Celebration great. Vic Foy spent some time with the angelic evangelist to find out what living with a calling is like.
Hanekom said: 'I start my day with God Almighty in prayer and meditating on his word. Then it’s off to the gym. That’s how I keep in shape.'
'My whole day will be filled with meetings. Some business meetings, or meeting with friends. If I have a booking over the weekend, I also rehearse and do some all-important admin.'
Born and raised in Belhar, Cape Town, Hanekom packed up her life in 2009 and headed to the bright lights of Johannesburg. 'Joburg is my base. My family still stays in Cape Town and my brother lives in New Zealand,' Hanekom said.
Making a career in gospel is nothing shy of a calling. Hanekom said: 'I sing gospel because I love God, with all my heart, and I feel fulfilled when I do it. I am also a born-again Christian and believe that God has chosen me to minister the good news through music.'
Besides faith, Hanekom’s drive and motivation comes from the overwhelming support she receives from family and her ever-growing number of fans. 'I wouldn’t be able to do any of what I do, without the overriding guidance of God...,' Hanekom said.
With plans to head back to Cape Town to record this year, Hanekom will be kept busy running various charitable projects, as well as heading out on the road with Joyous Celebration to tour the country.
Her message, for all Jet readers, is a powerful yet simple one. 'Find your purpose in life and live it. There's nothing more rewarding than to do what you've been created to do. Never give up on your dreams! Work hard, love unconditionally and believe, through Christ, that all things are possible. I love you all and God bless.'
