Zahara exploded onto the local music scene with her uniquely mesmerising voice and achieved almost instant acclaim. Despite the overnight fame, the 23-year-old songbird remains as humble as ever. She shared her remarkable story with Jet.

Who is Zahara?

My real name is Bulelwa Mkutukane, I’m 23 years old and I was born in Phumlani, a small village outside East London. I’m the sixth-born of seven kids. My mother was a domestic worker and my dad works at a factory – they’ve been married for 35 years now. I’m very close to my mom and I give credit to her for having faith in my career.

How would you describe yourself?

A songwriter, a free-spirited woman and an aspiring poet.

How do you feel about achieving almost instant success with your debut album, Loliwe?

I’m very surprised by how things have turned out! I believe that God’s timing was perfect for this to happen – I’m ready for it, mentally and spiritually. It hasn’t been an easy road for me, but I thank my friends who believed in me when I wanted to give up on music.

What makes your music different?

It’s a fresh sound with lyrics people can relate to. Once, in East London, people literally cried when I performed. I didn’t know that my music had such an impact.

Name some of the people who’ve contributed to your success.

My family, friends, TK (TK Nciza, co-owner of TS records) and Nhlanhla Nciza and the whole TS Records crew have contributed immensely to my career. But it wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for God and His mercy on me.

The highlights of your career?

Meeting Tata (Nelson) Mandela for the first time was a breathtaking moment for me and performing at the Macufe Festival in Bloemfontein last October made me feel I had finally arrived.

Your career tips and advice…

It’s important to set realistic goals for yourself. Work hard on what you believe in and never allow anyone to shift your focus. It’s also good to associate yourself with people who share the same vision as you.

Check out other rising stars in the South African music industry like Charisma Hanekom, Elvis Blue and Mahalia Buchanan.
